Description
Battelle Energy Alliance (BEA), Management & Operating Contractor of the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) is offering the opportunity to license, develop, and commercialize a new, patent pending, forward osmosis (FO) technology that may dramatically improve costs associated with traditional processes. License rights may be issued on an exclusive or nonexclusive basis and may include usage limitations. Additional development and support may be possible through a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) with some or all of the funding being provided by the licensee(s). Technology Description BEA has developed a novel method of introducing and removing FO draw solutes to a solution without the use of a membrane. The FO draw solutes utilized in the technology are switchable polarity solvents (SPS). In the presence of carbon dioxide the SPS is miscible with water and acts as a powerful draw solute. When the carbon dioxide is removed through a combination of reduced atmosphere, gas purge, and/or heating the SPS becomes immiscible with water separating to produce a water solution with a minimum of dissolved impurities. The removal of the SPS from drawn water is in effect a solvent extraction. During this step any organic impurities in the feed stream that made it through the FO membrane will be extracted into the organic layer of the SPS and removed from the treated water prior to further processing. Requirements Companies and research partners interested in participating in further development and commercialization of this technology should provide a brief expression of interest statement no later than thirty (30) days from the publication date of this Notice. The statement of interest should including the following information: •1. An overview of the entity including name, physical address of headquarters and major facilities, phone number and e-mail address of a representative who can be contacted regarding the expression of interest. •2. A description of the entity's technical expertise relevant to commercializing this technology. •3. A description of the entity's motivation for pursuing this opportunity. Suitable partners will be provided with further information on the technology. Such information may require execution of a Nondisclosure Agreement. Respondents wishing to enter into negotiations for a commercial license may be required to submit a business plan for the commercialization of the technology. Please provide your expression of interest by email to the undersigned no later than thirty (30) days from the publication date of this Notice.
