Description
NASA/ARC is hereby soliciting information about potential sources for an electrochemical ammonia removal system. This Request For Information (RFI) is for an electrochemical ammonia removal system that will be a component of a new spacecraft water recycling system. The technology shall perform via electrochemical oxidation of ammonia or via ammonia electrolysis. The proposed system will be able to reduce ammonia levels from 500 ppm to at least 50 ppm (10%) in a maximum time frame of 6 hours. The system shall be able to operate in hypertonic solutions (10-25 g/L NaCl) and in presence of total organic carbon (primarily urea and surfactants) in the range of 10 to 300 ppm. The system shall have the capability of being operated continuously. It is highly desirable that system will produce valuable chemicals during the process. Detailed specifications: 1.Working flow rate: 160 L/h. 2.Power consumption: approximately or less than 750 W. 3.Ammonia removal rate: approximately 100 ppm/hr NH3. 4.Working pH: between 6 and 9. 5.Maximum size (cell): 1 square feet. Safety features: 1.Should be constructed of corrosion resistant materials. 2.Should minimize the use toxic materials or chemicals. 3.System should avoid venting of flammable or explosive gases during operation (e.g. hydrogen etc.) The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Ames Research Center (ARC) is seeking capability statements from all interested parties, including Small, Small Disadvantaged (SDB), 8(a), Woman-owned (WOSB), Veteran Owned (VOSB), Service Disabled Veteran Owned (SD-VOSB), Historically Underutilized Business Zone (HUBZone) businesses, and Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU)/Minority Institutions (MI) for the purposes of determining the appropriate level of competition and/or small business subcontracting goals for the acquisition of an Electrochemical Ammonia Removal System. The Government reserves the right to consider a Small, 8(a), Woman-owned (WOSB), Service Disabled Veteran (SD-VOSB), or HUBZone business set-aside based on responses hereto. No solicitation exists; therefore, do not request a copy of the solicitation. If a solicitation is released it will be synopsized in FedBizOpps and on the NASA Acquisition Internet Service. It is the potential offerors responsibility to monitor these sites for the release of any solicitation or synopsis. Interested offerors/vendors having the required specialized capabilities to meet the above requirement should submit a capability statement of 10 pages or less indicating the ability to perform all aspects of the effort described herein. Please advise if the requirement is considered to be a commercial or commercial-type product. A commercial item is defined in FAR 2.101. This synopsis is for information and planning purposes and is not to be construed as a commitment by the Government nor will the Government pay for information solicited. Respondents will not be notified of the results of the evaluation. Respondents deemed fully qualified will be considered in any resultant solicitation for the requirement. All responses shall be submitted electronically to Ms. Robin Wong, e-mail: Robin.L.Wong@nasa.gov, no later than 4:00PM (PST), July 22, 2012. Please reference RFI-EARS in any response.
