- Description
- The Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research (RES) and other offices use the TRAC/RELAP Advanced Computational Engine (TRACE) thermal-hydraulic system code regularly for analyses of transients in operating reactors to support confirmation of licensees' analyses, and analyses for the certification of advanced reactor designs. The TRACE code is subject to continual development and testing due to its reliance upon empirically based constitutive models. This is done in part by using separate-effects experimental facilities to validate existing models or develop new models and correlations. These experiments are vital to sustaining and improving the accuracy and robustness of the NRC's primary system code. In addition model development becomes necessary for testing as the code is applied to the different and non-typical conditions and geometries of next generation plant types with new safety systems, component designs, and passive features. Achieving this research work has required placement of periodic 5-yr contracts to provide for necessary on-going generation of test data and model development activities to address planned and emergent issues with the code. Predecessor contracts have been referred to as thermal-hydraulic institute (THI). As in previous THI contracts, task orders that deal with specific experiments and acquisition of specific sets of data for developing and longer term issues will be issued based on the proposed scope of work subject to changes in staff priorities for model development and code improvement needs. This project supports the Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research (RES) and other offices that use the TRACE thermal-hydraulic system code for analyses of transients in operating reactors, analyses to support resolution of generic issues, evaluation of emergency procedures and accident management strategies, and supporting analyses for new reactors. This work is an essential part of the RES development plan for TRACE and PARCS (Purdue Advanced Reactor Core Simulator, a three-dimensional (3D) core neutronics simulator that can be coupled TRACE). In addition, as the agency moves forward and more new reactor designs that consider small and medium-sized integral pressurized water reactors (e.g., NuScale, PRISM, and mPower) are proposed. The technical reviews for these advanced designs are expected to require significant research and challenge the capabilities of the TRACE code in many areas. Since TRACE is the main tool for confirmatory analyses of a broad range of thermal-hydraulic problems for current and new reactor designs, it is essential that this experimental program continues to be funded to allow research and development to stay ahead of analysis requirements of these atypical Pressurized Water Reactors designs.
