Description
The following are additional details regarding the needed visitor center: 1. GENERAL 1.01 PURPOSE OF THE PROJECT The goal of this project is to design a small visitor center for the Mount St Helens National Volcanic Monument on the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. The visitor center would provide a stopping place for tourist that want to visit the East side of the mountain and blast zone. This area is along a very popular road called the 99 road and has several destination sites along the route concluding at Windy Ridge, the closest destination site to the mountain that a visitor can drive to. The Visitor Center will not only serve as a destination for tourist but will be a place where the Forest highlights its evolving collaborative efforts with outside business, interpreters and a growing volunteer work force. The site will serve two functions: 1. Provide information and interpretation for tourist/visitor to the volcanic monument. 2. Provide day-use to restroom facilities, and a limited snack and drink selection. The Cascade Peaks Visitor Center will allow visitors to purchase NW Forest Passes, obtain information on the site conditions, and learn about Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument. Interpretive programs will be a highlight of the facility and the features of both the inside and outside of the building will reflect this. This will be by an outdoor area where interpreters can do outside talks and presentations weather permitting. Additionally, there will be in indoor area that will double as an area to do interpretive talks and to be about to sit and have lunch if a visitor chooses. Other feature will allow a place where volunteers, other cooperators and Forest employees can give information, have items for sale or be available for questions. The operational components of the building will emphasize current agency goals for building energy efficiency and site sustainability. This would include high efficiency windows and a system that can efficiently use a power generator that will be supplying power to the building. Solar may be an option if cost/benefit ratio point to a viable alternative energy source.. 1.02 GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT A. The Cascade Peaks Visitor Center will be an approximately 1,300 square foot structure that operates as an information and interpretive center and retail point. An open floor plan with the building and window facing the mountain will be critical. The customer service area will include a reception counter, retail storage, and educational and sales displays. B. Outside the facility there will be an area that visitor could enjoy interpretive presentations and outdoor seating for for up to 12 people. Typical interpretive talks would be for groups of individuals 10 - 25 in number. Parking at the facility will include a main parking area and an overflow/RV area for oversized vehicles. A concrete vault toilet facility will be placed near the day-use parking area. C. Removal of an existing double-wide trailer with composting toilet -Note that this project does not include interprative exhibit design.
