- Description
- The proposed program provides a source for commercial high grade spinel windows. The approach is to leverage high purity spinel power production developed at the Naval Research Laboratory, to develop a commercially viable process for its production in large quantities and processing to produce optical quality, low absorption, highly rugged glass. The low absorption and high transmission of the ceramic system make it ideal for sensor applications as well as laser system protection. The high strength provides capability for high pressure systems, and improved protection of optics against projectiles in the tactical environment. The proposed effort is also expected to contribute to DARPA's High Energy Liquid Laser Defense System (HELLADS) program. The contractor will perform the following tasks: - Design and procure HP Die components to produce 12"x18" elliptical windows. - Produce 60kg of standard ready to press spinel powder. - Fabricate one 12"x18" window using standard powder. - Polish and deliver one 12"x18" window using standard powder. - Transition NRL's high purity spinel powder to MER. - NRL provides low loss powder to MER for cursory experiments to insure successful technology transfer. - Demonstration of high purity powder at MER. - Preparation of high purity spinel powder at MER to produce twelve 6cm diam. disks. - Fabricate 12 6cm diam. disks using MER high purity spinel powder.
