Description
1. Background: The RDECOM CERDEC NVESD is researching processor technologies that would enable extreme low-power computing solutions for soldier-borne embedded vision systems. For such systems, a minimal size, weight, and power (SWaP) envelope is critical. To support extended mission durations, envisioned next generation systems will possess a power budget on the order of 1W, to include the processor, user interfaces, display, and multisensor I/O, while executing associated real-time application software. Existing processor solutions do not exhibit the level of performance, integration, and power efficiencies that will be required. Given the somewhat unique application domain, the ability to fully leverage advances in traditional processor technologies may be limited. As a result, NVESD is querying industry comments regarding their technology roadmaps that may be relevant to future processors suitable for this class of application. The intent of this RFI is to assist in the development of an NVESD investment strategy the application of which could expand the range of suitable commercial processor solutions for NVESD mission areas. 2. RFI Requirements: NVESD intends to develop an investment strategy that would help ensure that realizable processor solutions for extreme low-power soldier-borne vision systems will exist in a time frame supporting insertion into customer programs (3-5 years). Prior to the development of an investment strategy, NVESD wishes to understand if, and where the relevant technology leaders are focusing their low power processor research. It may be the case that with some level of investment, such research could be tailored towards NVESD mission requirements, thus increasing the likelihood that cost-effective, extreme low-power yet high performance processors suitable for soldier-borne vision applications will exist in a relevant timeframe. In this regard, NVESD is reaching out to leading technology developers to request input and establish dialog regarding ongoing and planned research in low power processor technology. 3. Submission Instructions: All firms wishing to provide a response to this RFI are encouraged to contact the Government POC listed below. For coordination purposes, initial responses should be provided in electronic format (preferably) via email. The receipt of any emails exceeding 5MB in size without prior coordination with the POC may result in such emails being discarded without notification of the recipient or the sender. Interested parties are requested to contact the Government POC by 9 October 2012. The mailing address for any hardcopy responses is: US Army RDECOM CERDEC Night Vision and Electronic Sensors Directorate RDER-NVS-SI ATTN: John Hodapp 10221 Burbeck Rd Fort Belvoir, Virginia 22060-5806 Government POC: John Hodapp, (703) 704-3283, DSN 654, john.hodapp@us.army.mil Questions of a contractual nature should be address to Ms. Patricia Davis, Contracting Officer, Army Contracting Command - Aberdeen Proving Grounds Belvoir Division at jean.p.davis2.civ@mail.mil.
