- FERC-12-R-0115 FERC-12-R-0115.docx FERC-12-R-0115 FERC-12-R-0115_1.docx Considerable discussion was presented in the April 2012 Federal Energy Regulatory (FERC) staff Geomagnetic Disturbance (GMD) Technical Conference relating to the possible correlation of transformer failures and GMD activity. In a 2010 study published by Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) observational data was provided that indicated there may be an association between an increase in failures of generator step up transformers (GSU) and geomagnetic storm activity. Further research on a broader population of events is needed in order to determine if the correlation between these events is significant. A high correlation may indicate that there is a direct relationship to these low level events and additional reliability actions may need to be taken. The purpose of this acquisition is to expand on the analysis performed for the ORNL study to include additional and more recent information. This work will allow for the application of a broader statistical sample and provide for a more reliable determination of the degree of correlation between these events. Results will then be used in the assessment of the system to impacts of (GMD) events.
