Description
The current data acquisition equipment (approximately 10 yrs old) for the test basin in the ICE Engineering facility does not work. This equipment is used to record data during water/ ice test and model structure testing (Ships, offshore oil platforms, etc.) such as forces, velocities, positions, accelerations, and any other parameters required to meet model testing needs both static and dynamic. It will also be used to measure ice properties and carriage motion during a test. The equipment manufacturer was brought in to determine the repair cost of the existing system which was estimated at approximately $30,000. Market research was completed at this same time to determine the expected cost of purchasing a new piece of equipment. Currently there is a portable data acquisition system available with expanded capabilities that the current equipment does not have. The ability to move a new system from lab to lab would be substantial upgrade to the efficiency and cost savings for the lab. One portable data acquisition system would allow multiple labs to use one machine instead of each having to purchase a single unit for each. Due to the cyclic nature of the work, there is down time between lab stations so that the sharing of the equipment would be possible. This portable system could be used in the field as the need arises.
