Description

Limited Sources Justification Notice Description: The Occupational Health Strategic Healthcare Group (10P3D) of VHA proposes that the National Academy of Sciences convene a collaboration to advance the scientific knowledge base in organizational, social and cultural barriers to Safe Patient Handling programs. The Workshop will be co-sponsored by other Federal Agencies including NIOSH. VHA is a partner in this Project led by the National Academies (see NAS Proposal No. 10001175). The National Academy of Science (NAS) in conjunction with the NIOSH (CDC) and VA (VHA Occupational Health) will conduct an investigative meeting and report "Project" on the institutional barriers to the practice of 'safe patient handling and movement' in health care. VA will fund only part of the Project which focuses upon 'expanding the domains and exploring new conceptualizations of the barriers and incentives to safe patient handling and movement. The project will examine systems issues, organization of work (i.e. management domains), social and cultural factors of patients and staff that have previously not been studied related to injury risk for patients and for-health care staff. The NAS Board on Human Systems Integration (BOHSI) is uniquely qualified to lead this investigation, which will provide a report on the 'Frontiers for Further Inquiry' with recommendations for the continuing the evolution of improvements for both patients and health care providers. The Board on Human Systems Integration (BOHSI) will lead this project for NAS.
