Description
DARPA's Structural Logic program seeks to revolutionize structural designs that make up the basis for modern military platforms and systems by enabling these designs to passively adapt to varying loads and simultaneously exhibit high stiffness and high damping over a wide dynamic range. The goal of the Structural Logic program is to develop innovative tactical structures that are inherently adaptable to variable load conditions over a broad range in a dynamic operational environment. The envisioned adaptability is derived from the programmable configurations of the constituent elements and sub-assemblies. Phase I of the Structural Logic program developed elements and sub-assemblies for integration into structural designs that leveraged innovative phenomena such as negative stiffness, negative mass, and non-linear targeted energy transfer. These constituent building blocks demonstrated passive adaptability, and simultaneously exhibited high stiffness and high damping in response to a wide range of impulse and harmonic (vibratory) loadings. Concepts and technologies developed during Phase I demonstrated the ability to mitigate and reduce input accelerations and dynamic loads. In addition to development of the constituent components, the program also developed design and optimization tools assisting in selection, placement and integration of Structural Logic based elements and sub-assemblies. The next phase of the program will extend the concepts and technologies to an entire structural frame such as a tactical platform instead of a single sub-assembly. The goal of the Structural Logic Phase II program is to demonstrate that this radically new approach to structural design can be applied to relevant and real world tactical systems. During Phase I of the program a wide range of relevant tactical applications were evaluated for the Structural Logic concepts and technologies including: space, armor, aerodynamic, hydrodynamic and civil engineering structural systems. While the listed applications were evaluated, and in many cases laboratory experiments and controlled demonstrations were performed to further examine their feasibility; the government has selected a hydrodynamic application, in particular a high speed boat (watercraft) for the Phase II demonstration.
