- Description
- This request is an announcement for information/market research for planning purposes. This synopsis does not constitute a request for proposal, request for quote, invitation for bid nor does its issuance, in any way, restrict the Government as to its ultimate acquisition approach. The Air Force Nuclear Weapons Center PZIA, Kirtland AFB, New Mexico is seeking potential sources to provide the following item(s) with the included specifications: Item #1-- Table Top Bose-Einstein Condensate System SPECIFICATIONS: The required table-top BEC atom chip system shall include: a) dual chamber atom chip vacuum cell with one chamber containing a Rubidium source and optical access for laser cooling, including a mounting fixture for the vacuum cell chamber; b) magnetic coil assembly consisting of multiple coils for creating a magneto optical trap for creating gradient bias fields for magnetic field cancellation, and external bias magnetic fields for creating atom chip traps; c) a two-dimensional magneto optical trap (2D MOT) assembly that includes a magnetic system (e.g. permanent magnet configuration) to provide sufficient field curvature for creating a durable 2D MOT, and a transfer stage for coupling/connecting the quantum gas momentum flux density from the 2D MOT in an origination chamber to the 3D MOT in a receiving chamber; d) an electronically controllable transfer coil to provide an axial trapping potential that is mode matched to the normal component direction of the atom chip, capable of transferring ultracold quantum gas atoms to the integrated atom chip, that has a low operating current not to exceed 25 Amperes; e) a rigid platform to mount the above mentioned structural test equipment, including a full optics setup for producing two- and three-dimensional MOTs within the vacuum cell chamber, where the areal size of this platform is not to exceed 5 square feet to accommodate optical pumping along a single axis of the test system and including a separate 2D MOT optics setup with a fiber launching plate with optical beam shaping capability; f) the delivered test system must be pre-aligned by the vendor and operational with only minor adjustments after shipping; g) the vacuum cell chamber must be formed with high quality A/R coated glass to accommodate multiple optical wave lengths in the BEC experiment. The required laser system shall include: a) a 780 nm wavelength beam for controlling and imaging Rubidium 87 in its gaseous cold atom state and BEC state; b) an optical spectroscopy module with feedback electronics for laser frequency stabilization; c) fiber optic shutters and drivers for better than one microsecond blocking of optical pumping and imaging laser beams; d) mechanical shutters and drivers for high extinction of laser beams; e) voltage controlled frequency of two phase-locked lasers, including fiber couplers and patch cables for delivering laser light to the table-top test system; f) all necessary free-space optics and optomechanics and laser controlled electronics including laser source, temperature controllers, amplifier controllers, feedback electronics, phase-locked loop photo detectors, and power supplies. The required electronics system shall include: a) a multi-channel voltage controlled current source designed for driving GlasSi atom chips; b) integrated interlock electronics circuitry to prevent current overloads, over driving circuits, over temperature detection, and to provide open-load protection, and high isolation balance inputs for common mode rejection; c) electrically floating outputs for driving atom chip traces; d) all input and output cables. The required drivers shall include: a) a coil driver, four channel voltage control bipolar current source for driving the 3D MOT, including necessary interlocks; b) Z coil driver, one channel voltage controlled unipolar current source, including necessary interlocks; c) RF driver, an integrated DDS based frequency synthesizer and RF power amplifier driving an integrated RF antenna (along axial coil direction) to achieve evaporative cooling. The required computer control and data acquisition system shall include: a) a field programmable gate array (FPGA) system for real-time control of all the integrated hardware including analog and digital outputs; b) at least 16 analog outputs with 16 bits of dynamic range for digital to analog conversion and at least 32 digital outputs at 5V TTL with at least 10 microsecond time resolution; c) hardware for programming the DDS synthesizer; d) control and acquisition software system preloaded on a personal computer with full interface connectivity to the FPGA system. The required integration delivery and installation of the test system shall include: a) integration and pre-testing of all subsystems; b) correct fine alignment and adjustments to achieve BEC; c) hand delivery of sensitive components; d) onsite installation and initial operational test at an AFRL designated experimental location in Hawaii. Statement of Capabilities may be submitted by facsimile at (505) 846-8925 Attn: Jarrett Sainz or preferably via E-mail to: jarrett.sainz@kirtland.af.mil. Responses must be received no later than 05 April 2012 at 11:00 a.m. Mountain Standard Time. Identify your response with the corresponding program title: Sources Sought: Table Top Bose Einstein Condensate system
