Description
RFI 20130828TB Information CH2M Hill Plateau Remediation Company (CHPRC) is interested in receiving information on the feasibility of adapting spent nuclear fuel dry storage systems for the management of Hanford's cesium and strontium capsules. The intent of this Request for Information (RFI) is to obtain information on modifications to dry storage systems since this alternative was last considered in FY 2003. This information will support future decisions by the Department of Energy and to determine the feasibility of implementing a system for placing the capsule into dry storage. If dry storage is determined to be feasible a Request for Proposal (RFP) may be issued at a later date. Of particular interest to CHPRC is the ability of the dry storage systems to: · Safely store the capsules for up to 300 years, without removal of capsules from the primary storage canister/container and without the need for a repackaging facility · Store the capsules in a configuration that will easily accommodate future disposal decisions · Maintain low levels of public and worker exposures during the transfer and storage of the capsules · Minimize thermal cycles during capsule movements and storage It is CHPRC preference to minimize modifications to the Waste Encapsulation Storage Facility (WESF) and the Documented Safety Analysis (DSA), however all information and options will be considered. The WESF exhaust and ventilation systems have several issues that may impact the transfer of the capsules to a dry storage system or the compliant management of the WESF legacy contamination. CHPRC is very interested in obtaining information on dry storage systems that will preclude the need to upgrade the exhaust and ventilation systems and/or the need to stabilize the legacy contamination in the WESF hot cells, ductwork and filters. Information provided in response to this RFI will be treated as proprietary.
