All primary service personnel shall have at least one backup support that shall have at least the same level of expertise on the equipment covered by this contract. This maintenance agreement is required to maintain laboratory accreditation. The nature of NCI's research requires utilization of this instrumentation around the clock and often over weekends. Thus, the NCI cannot afford lengthy periods of down-time. FEI has manufacturer-trained service engineers on site Monday through Friday and some parts are also kept on site. The proximity of manufacturer-trained service engineers and OEM parts that are designed for the instrument, require this contractor to be the sole award recipient for this service contract. To sustain the high level of precision required for operation, periodic maintenance (beyond end-user ability) is required. Without such maintenance, generation of high quality, reproducible data is compromised. FEI is the sole vendor possessing the capability to inspect, repair, upgrade, and maintain the Electron Microscope, therefore is uniquely qualified to service NCI's electron microscope.
