- Subject: Scanning Thermal Microscopy (SThM) System and STHM Probes Reference Number: NB620040-15-02076 Notice Type: Pre-Solicitation Notice - Notice of Intent Synopsis: The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Acquisition Management Division, on behalf of the NIST Center for Nanoscience Technology, intends to negotiate with Applied Nanostructure, Inc; Mountain View, CA, on a sole source basis under the authority of FAR Subpart FAR subpart 13.106(1)(b)(1)(i), to purchase a Applied Nanostuctures, Inc scanning thermal microscopy (SThM) system and STHM probes. The required scanning thermal microscopy (SThM) and (SThM) probes must rely on a proven technique, be commercially available, and not be a prototype. Applied NanoStructures, Inc. develops, manufactures, and supplies various nanostructures including both conventional and specialized scanning probes for atomic force microscopes. In particular, they recently (July 2014) released the Vertisense Scanning Thermal microscopy system (SThM probes and amplifiers) that meet all of NIST's technical specifications. The Vertisense system (patent pending) is the sole system available which is compatible with the Anasys nanoIR1 atomic force microscope already installed in the CNST. The Vertisense SThM system is sold by Applied NanoStructures, Inc. exclusively. Additionally, the SThM probes are sold only in conjunction with the Vertisense amplifier. Applied Nanostructures, Inc is the only source capable of manufacturing Scanning Thermal Microscopy (SThM) System and SThM probes that meets CNST's requirements. Applied Nanostructures Vertisense SThM system and probes are the only ones commercially available which are compatible with the instrumentation already installed in the CNST. The Vertisense SThM probes uses a nanoscale thermocouple located at the probe tip that is thermally insulated from the rest of the probe that enable measuring temperature or thermal conductivity map at 20nm lateral resolution and measuring sample temperatures up to 700◦C without heating the sample. Interested parties which believe they could satisfy the requirements listed above for NIST may identify their capability to do so in writing on or before the response date for this notice. This notice of intent is not a solicitation. Information submitted in response to this notice will be used solely to determine whether competitive procedures could be used for this acquisition.
