Description
Element 2 (XR Series) High-Resolution Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer Analytical System Performance Requirements We require an ICP-MS instrument devoted to highly accurate, highly sensitive, high-throughput multi-element and isotopic analysis of trace and ultra-trace elements from solutions and transient signals from chromatographic sample introduction, and which is compatible with the existing Element2 high resolution ICPMS in our laboratory. The Element XR model high resolution ICPMS from Thermo Fisher Scientific is the only instrument on the market that has been shown to be capable of meeting our needs. The primary features of the Thermo Fisher Scientific Element XR instrument which are pertinent to our requirements are: 1. an ion source at ground potential that allows easy and safe interfacing of chromatographic separations and laser ablation; 2. thirteen orders of magnitude of linear dynamic range due to the unique detection system; 3. automated cross calibration of ion counting, analog and Faraday cup modes; 4. automatic auto-ranging of the SEM to protect it against large signals; 5. extreme stability of mass calibration to allow routine and general use of medium and high resolution modes; 6. automated computer-controlled variable mass resolution during an analysis; 7. Unprecedented ion yield which leads to the highest sensitivity and thus the best limits of detection for samples which are not blank-limited. These features, performance and specifications are unique to the Thermo Element XR. The performance of the Element XR is documented in over 10,000 publications in the refereed scientific literature, and it is on the GSA contract schedule. In addition, the requested system is fully compatible with our existent Element2 in our laboratory, facilitating the transfer of analytical methods and applications.
