Description
The United States Mint at San Francisco is undergoing an extensive upgrade to bring the building up to current seismic codes. The upgrade has been broken down into seven projects, also called "bid packages". The current project is bid package #4, and consists of the following work to the interior of the building: • Bracing of marble wall facings. Marble facings in the second floor lobby and stairwell areas are attached to several types of wall structures. The means of attachment and/or the strength of the wall structure is known to be inadequate. Remediation for some areas may require dismantling and then rebuilding of the wall. Estimated marble area: 3500 square feet. • Bracing of ceilings and walls. Plaster ceilings in the second, third, and fourth floor corridor areas require lateral bracing. The corridor walls currently stop at ceiling height; the walls must be extended to full height. Estimated ceiling area: 4300 square feet. • Bracing of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP). • Relocation of utilities and information technology infrastructure as necessary to gain construction access. The United States Mint is an operating production facility for numismatic coins. Contractors must work under the following constraints: • The facility must remain operational throughout the construction project. Construction work shall be performed during weekends, every other Friday, and holidays. • The United States Mint is a secure facility; all personnel and materials shall conform to entrance and exit screenings. Personnel must pass background investigations prior to gaining access. • Due to the secure nature of the United States Mint, project drawings must remain on United States Mint premises. Bidders must visit the facility to review the drawings. • The United States Mint is a designated historical structure. Original finishes and appearances shall be preserved. • The building was constructed prior to 1940, and is known to contain lead and asbestos bearing materials. • The area above the plaster ceilings in the corridor areas is designated as a confined space, permit required area. • Space for onsite storage and staging is limited.
