- Background Information: Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) has developed a wide-angle non-mechanical electro-optic beamsteering phased array for advanced laser imaging and ranging (LIDAR) applications. The device is based on subwavelength spaced metallic nanoantenna fed by Silicon waveguides. Integrated thermo-optic phase-shifters along the propagation direction allows for subwavelength spacing in the propagation direction, while integrated 2-pi phase shifters on each subwavelength fed waveguide row provide 2D large angle beamsteering. This large area array technology is manufactured in a Si CMOS compatible process in which control electronics can be co-integrated, and our phased array technology can be used to form 2D beams with small angular beam size electronically steered over a significant portion of the entire hemisphere. The flexible design of the nanoantenna aperture array allows for tailoring angular beam size and side-lobe suppression which leads to low cross-talk. The technology is described further in U.S. Patent No. 9,104,086, Method and apparatus of wide-angle optical beamsteering from a nanoantenna phased array, issued on August 11, 2015 (SD# 12441.0) Technology Highlights: -Large area phased array non-mechanical electro-optical beamsteering, readily achieving angular steering of (450,1200). -Apodized arrays for beam forming and reduction of side-lobes and cross-talk. -Co-integration with coherent balanced homodyne receiver in same Si photonics process. -Co-integration with avalanche photodiode based receiver in same Si photonics process. -Co-integration with CMOS control electronics. -Low cost manufacturing of large area phased array with control electronics. Opportunity Description: SNL is seeking partners to further develop and commercialize a chip-scale non-mechanical electro-optic beamsteering phased array for LIDAR applications. Cooperative Research and Development Agreements (CRADAs) and Licensing Agreements are available. Sandia invites interested parties to provide a detailed description of relevant background, experience, expertise, and capabilities that could be brought into a collaborative partnership with Sandia. Specific requirements are as follows: Mandatory Requirements: 1)U.S. companies able to enter into a CRADA agreement with Sandia National Laboratories, which requires in-kind contribution in the form of laboratory staff and instrumentation 2)U.S. companies capable of providing a minimum of $500K funds-in 3)Demonstrated experience in bringing products to market Desired Requirements: 1)Demonstrated experience, expertise, and capabilities in the design, development and manufacturing of integrated circuits 2)Demonstrated successful partnering and teaming relationships with R&D organizations In addition to evaluating the provided information as outlined above, Sandia will evaluate all responses and select prospective parties with which to engage in further discussions based on the following criteria, pursuant to Sandia's technology transfer mission: 1)How will the respondent deploy the technology for the benefit of the U.S. public good? 2)How will the respondent's deployment of the technology benefit U.S. economic competitiveness?
