Background: The National Institutes of Health National Center for Advancing Translational Science performs numerous High Throughput Assays annually. A key step of any high throughput assay is the addition of compounds into a microwell plate by utilizing a pintool. The Tox21 group uses a pintool to transfer compounds into assay plates to perform the screens as directed by the Assay Guidance Committee. It continues to use a pintool after comparing the results of transferring compounds between this technique and acoustic transfers. Although acoustic transfers are non-contact and eliminate the risk of carryover, the pintool actually generates less false positive and negative results; ensuring a superior data quality. Purpose and Objective: The purpose of the pintool cleaner is to improve upon existing cleaning methods and eliminating the risk of carryover from previous pin cycles. This will increase data quality, allowing the Tox21 group to achieve its goals of running multiple assays a year while minimizing the number of samples to be rescreened.
