- Description
- An estimated 6.6 million South Africans are infected with HIV, the highest number in any country in the world. The country is also significantly affected by a related tuberculosis (TB) epidemic. The Health Office manages one of the largest President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) program in the world, as well TB activities funded from USAID's account. USAID/SA funding for health programs is expected to exceed $200 million in FY 2016. The Health Office has grown rapidly from 12 staff in 2007 to over 46 staff in 2016; the Office collaborates closely with other United States Government (USG) agencies to implement PEPFAR, especially the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Health Office staff are active participants in PEPFAR policy and program design, and often chair interagency technical working groups on a range of health-related issues. In this third, five-year phase of the program, PEPFAR/South Africa is oriented toward strategic partnership with all levels of the South African Government (SAG), with an emphasis on epidemic control, DREAMS, health systems strengthening, and cost efficiencies. The Partnership Framework embodies this new strategic direction and emphasizes the alignment of PEPFAR/SA and SAG information and reporting systems. Enhancing the availability, quality, and use of Strategic Information (SI) for both PEPFAR/SA and the SAG are fundamental to achieving success in these areas. The South Africa PEPFAR program continues to account for approximately one-quarter of all PEPFAR results globally; in this context the Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E)/SI Advisor plays a critical, cross-cutting role that affects not only the direction and progress of PEPFAR/South Africa, but also of the global program
