Description
STATEMENT OF NEED VA Pittsburgh, Surgical Services, Operating Room is in need of multiple laparoscopic instruments. The instruments they are requesting are replacements for unrepairable instruments presently in trays and for the creation of additional trays. The laparoscopic instrument trays presently used are all uniform with the exact same type of instruments on each tray. This is important for uniformity of use for surgeons and residents. During laparoscopic surgery, the surgeons are watching the video monitors to see surgery going on internally on the patient. Therefore, they rely heavily on the feel of instruments in their hands as they are not watching the instruments. The specific laparoscopic instruments requested are a type known as Snowden-Pencer which is a trademark name for the specific type of handle and ratchet action. These instruments are manufactured by V. Mueller. The approved distributor for V. Mueller instruments is Carefusion 2200, Inc. VA Pittsburgh has previously purchased these instruments from Carefusion 2200, Inc. Other companies carry laparoscopic instruments similar as far as the tips of the instruments. However, they are not the same beyond that. The requested instruments (Snowden-Pencer made by V. Mueller) are one piece with a D-Touch handle. Other laparoscopic instruments sold come in separate pieces with a piston grip handle. These are not what are being requested. These instruments are much more difficult for the surgeon to use with efficient hand movements.
