Description
UT-Battelle, LLC, acting under its Prime Contract No. DE-AC05-00OR22725 with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for the management and operation of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), is seeking commercialization partners for its Internal Combustion Engine Diagnostics technology portfolio. To meet increasingly strict fuel economy (efficiency) requirements and emissions standards worldwide, automotive manufacturers will need to dramatically improve internal combustion engine (ICE) performance and durability and further reduce emissions in the coming years. This will require greater knowledge of what is going on inside engines and exhaust systems, cylinder to cylinder, cycle to cycle. Existing measurement tools and techniques are slow, with limited spatial resolution and limited access to some ICE and drivetrain locations. Further complicating things, engine environments are among the harshest in terms of vibration, temperature, and dirt. The ORNL suite of tools meets the need for robust, cost-effective, advanced diagnostics that can operate in harsh environments to accelerate development of low-cost, clean, fuel-efficient, durable engines and related automotive systems. These instruments offer a broadly configurable diagnostic system for enabling better engine system development and require minimal modification to base engine hardware for simultaneous O2, CO2, H2O, temperature, and pressure mapping. The instruments contain multiple sources, detectors, and probes and can be tailored to accommodate customer applications. More information can be found at this ORNL Technology Transfer website. License applications will be evaluated based on prospective partners' ability and commitment to successfully commercialize the technology, with a preference for United States-based businesses and small businesses. For additional information and license application, contact David Sims, Commercialization Manager, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, simsdl@ornl.gov, 865-241-3808.
