- Description
- The National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS) program is a cooperative enterprise requiring a significant interaction and flow of information between NLS staff, producers, and network libraries. NLS provides certain materials to NLS network libraries, which in turn extend NLS services to the patrons under agreements with NLS. To support production, distribution and maintenance of these materials NLS has developed a number of business support information management systems. These BSS systems are essential to the functioning of the program and are used by NLS staff, network agency staff, NLS contractors and, most recently, patrons of the program. NLS materials include a large collection of commercially sourced and NLS-produced audio books in various digital formats. The agile and secure management of these digital assets is a major requirement to complete the modernization of the Production Inventory Control System (PICS). PICS automates the agency's procurement, production, and quality assurance of multimedia digital materials Digital Asset Management (DAM) software helps manage the ingestion, storage, and retrieval of multimedia digital asset materials. When the assets are limited to media (audio, video, images), the systems involved are also known as Media Asset Management (MAM) systems. NLS desires to procure a commercial off-the shelf (COTS) DAM system that can meet the NLS requirements.
