- Description
- USNA Rotor Hover Test Stand Improvement Requirements The USNA rotor hover stand (whirltower) is in need of upgrade and repair to enable it to support the engineering education mission. Service is required to bring the USNA rotor hover test stand to a state of capability to support class laboratories, engineering demonstrations, and internal and sponsored research. Capability Requirements -Designed to test rotors up to 20 feet in diameter -Rotational speeds between 700-1500 rpm -Rotational capability in clockwise and counterclockwise rotation -Designed for capability growth in future, providing the ability to use higher load capacity swashplates, rotor hub and rotor blades -Accurately control and measure rotational velocity -Adjust rotor blade pitch while operating at test velocities (collective pitch control) -Select rotational velocities from zero to realistic helicopter rotor tip speeds -Dynamically balance the rotor -Control rotor pitch, motor speed, and measure rotor torque and thrust from the control station. Equipment required to bring the hover stand to operational status includes: -Three-component load cell -Torque sensor -Slip ring assembly -16 channel rotating telemetry system, expandable to 32 channels -Rotor actuation system -Operator control console to control rotor speed and pitch. Operator console will capture system performance and health data, display power, thrust and torque. Service required includes: -Static and dynamic analysis of existing rotor system -Tuning of the existing rotor hub and rotor blades as required. Potential redesign of selected system components to enable higher power and capacity in the future -Review of conical tower to ensure safe operation for higher loads. -Design of the overall upgraded whirl tower system -Installation and integration of subsystems. -Training of USNA personnel on system operation and maintenance.
