Description
Department of Defense (DoD) Standard Practice: Additional information provided as part of this amendment include: 1. Newly attached inspection criteria for International Organization for Standardization (ISO) containers. (MIL-STD-3037) 2. An explanation on MIL-STD-3037 regarding "IMDG" and what that means to the Department of Defense (DoD): "U.S. Department of Defense reference to the term "IMDG" (International Maritime Dangerous Goods code) as it pertains to the condition of ISO freight containers, is referring to IMDG Hazardous Class 1 (explosives; excluding 1.4), or as stated in 49 CFR §176.172, a "Closed cargo transport unit for Class 1 (explosive) materials". For DoD, an "IMDG" container is suitable for transport of explosives. A "non-IMDG" container for DoD refers to a container not suitable for transport of explosives, but which is suitable for transport of all other materials including hazardous cargo. This terminology is therefore rather different than any commercial reference to "IMDG" containers as being suitable for all hazardous materials, and "non-IMDG" not suitable for movement of hazardous materials. U.S. DoD "IMDG" containers therefore need to be in a superior condition as required per military standard MIL-STD-3037 and per 49 CFR §176.172." 3. Additional information about the DoD, Surface Deployment and Distribution Command (SDDC) and specifically the methodologies of leasing containers can be obtained by contacting the following personnel directly: TSgt Michael Heth at michael.d.heth.mil@mail.mil or Mr. Tom Eslinger at thomas.c.eslinger2.civ@mail.mil
