- Description
- Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), operated by Battelle Memorial Institute under contract to the U.S. Department of Energy, solicits interest from companies interested in obtaining license rights to commercialize, manufacture and market the following technology. License rights may be issued on an exclusive or nonexclusive basis and may include specific fields of use. PNNL may also be available to licensee(s) to assist in further research and development of the technology under a SPP agreement, ACT agreement, or CRADA agreement. THE TECHNOLOGY: US Patent 8,425,654 is available for licensing. Radioactive gadolinium-153 is used in devices for the diagnosis and monitoring of neurological disorders, cardiac blockages or abnormalities, and primary and metastasized cancer tumors; and in industrial applications to measure the strength and integrity of structural materials and piping systems. To purify Gd-153 for use requires extensive chemical processing whose products-mercury and hydrogen gas-present unacceptable hazards not permitted in the radiological hot cell processing environment. To eliminate the generation of these elements, researchers at DOE's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory altered the traditional reduction procedure by using methanol as the process solvent. Its use avoids the presence of water and hydrated protons in the working solution, which can oxidize Eu2+ and cause hydrogen gas production. The process uses neutron irradiation of natural europium targets to produce Gd-153, along with a much larger amount of radioactive europium isotopes. The Gd-153 product is separated from radioactive europium by reducing the europium, then precipitating it as sulfate. The gadolinium remains in solution. After most of the europium has been removed by precipitation, the Gd-153 product is cleaned up using ion exchange. The end-product is high-purity Gd-153, free of other rare earths and other radionuclides. Although the new process resembles previous processes, the reduction takes place in an organic solvent and does not generate hydrogen gas. Hence, PNNL's process is cleaner and safer than previous processes. For all inquiries, please reference Battelle IPID 16715. NOTE: THIS IS NOT A PROCUREMENT. Any company interested in licensing this technology must respond with a letter of interest (may be submitted by e-mail) no later than thirty (30) days from the publication date of this Notice summarizing the company's business and technical expertise and motivation for pursuing this opportunity. Companies deemed appropriate will be provided with further information on the technology. Such information may require an executed Nondisclosure Agreement. Respondents wishing to enter into negotiations for a commercial license will be required to submit a business plan for the commercialization of the technology prior to licensee(s) selection and negotiations. Please send letters of interest to the attention of the POC identified within this Notice, referencing Battelle IPID 16715.
