Background 1.1 The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Clinical Center (CC) is a clinical research hospital providing all medical services for patients participating in human research protocols of the NIH. The CC provides patient facilities and services for clinical investigations by the NIH Institutes, research in related areas and supervises residency and other training programs. 1.2 The NIH Clinical Center Pharmacy Department Pharmacokinetics Research Unit collaborates and participates in the design and analysis of patient clinical research studies with various NIH institutes. The Pharmacokinetics Research Unit develops and validates bioanalytical assays for testing and analysis of human patient samples to determine pharmaceutical drug levels which are subsequently used to perform pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamics analyses. 2. Purpose 2.1 Purchase a Mettler-Toldeo XPE26 Micro-Balance to replace existing micro-balance. The new micro-balance will replace an existing balance which has become obsolete after 17 years of use, and parts are no longer available should repairs be required. 3. Pharmaceutical tablets, capsules, and other formulations are measured daily for testing and subsequent analysis. The balance must be calibrated daily, and must be working at optimal capacity to assure accurate measurements of all compounds being tested. The micro-balance is an essential analytical instrument in the CPRU lab which facilitates the progress of all human biological sample analyses for ongoing clinical research studies being conducted in collaboration with NIAID, NIDDK, NHGRI, NCI, and NICHD. The CPRU needs a Micro-Balance that has the following: • Balance must have a readability range of 1.0 micro grams to 10,000 micro grams. • Balance must have a repeatability range of 1.5 micro grams to 10,000 micro grams. • Balance should have full automatic calibration technology with two reference weights, as well as cosumizable scheduling of adjustments. (20 Points) • Balance should check for electrostatic charge, and must have an integrated or optional anti-static kit to remove electrostatic charge from samples and containers during weighing process. (20 Points) • Balance should have integrated hands-free sensors for automatic side/top door opening with hand motion, which can be programmed to open at various increments. (20 Points) • Balance should have an integrated level guide that alerts when the balance is out of level. (10 Points) • Balance must have a large, high-definition, full color touch screen with qwerty keyboard for easy and cusomizable user programming of applications. (10 Points) • Balance must have easy balance management features, and should easily disassemble for rapid cleaning. (10 Points) • One-year (12-month) warranty should cover parts and service for the XPE26 micro-balance as well as the systems software. • Customer assistance on XPE26 micro-balance must be available online or via phone with applications or service specialist.
