- Description
- Additional Information for contractors interested in the "Glacier Science Exhibit" Q. Your goals and objectives for this exhibit are stated in the solicitation (see below) but what do you want to emphasize among them? A. Our current outdated glacier-science exhibits aren't engaging people in the way we want, whereas other exhibits we've recently updated are achieving our objectives (e.g. "Salmon Forest"). We hope for the same success; to excite people about glaciers/science/climate change in interactive ways that use the best science and technology to engage learning. Goal: To connect people to the glacial environment in meaningful ways that foster learning and appreciation, by using more contemporary tools to deliver messages. Objectives: • Motivate people to dig deeper into questions about how science addresses changing climate and glacial response, and how people are affected. • Interpret current glacier science conducted by organizations like the Juneau Icefield Research Program (JIRP), USGS, and NOAA, especially about the causes and impacts of receding glaciers such as Mendenhall. • Answer commonly asked questions like what is a glacier, why is the ice blue, what gives the lake it's color (silt), and what are the benefits of silt. The current exhibits cover relevant topics but are outdated. • Provide a hands-on, engaging experience for visitors. • Create attractive exhibits that tell a complete story in a brief experience with a short holding power. Visitors should be able to experience each exhibit in less than 2 minutes. Due to overcrowding and tight spaces, we need visitors to keep moving through the space. • Create durable exhibits with minimal maintenance requirements. • Blend new exhibits with surrounding exhibits by using similar color schemes and fonts. Q. Who will control the data content for the exhibit since you state in the solicitation that you expect to use information from diverse sources such as the US Geologic Survey, Juneau Icefield Research Program, University of Alaska Southeast, and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration? A. We expect to provide key contacts at these institutions for the contractor to collaborate with on their own, and in consultation with Forest Service Visitor Center Staff (Nikki Olsen and John Neary). Q. You state two different options for timelines, which is your preferred? A. That depends. We want to emphasize quality over speed of completion, but we are also constrained by the visitor use season of May to September when no installation work can be achieved. If the contract is soon awarded, design is completed by spring, and fabrication is largely onsite beginning in early spring, it may be feasible to complete by April 30th. But that will entirely depend on the design itself and the degree to which fabrication and installation is completed on site. Q. Can you give examples of the type of media you hope to use? A. We'd prefer designers suggest appropriate media to meet our objectives, and yet we hope for innovative ideas that use technology and can be adapted to changing science rather than static signs that are quickly out-dated. One theme we've discussed is to invite the visitor to participate in an expedition across the icefield as part of the Juneau Icefield Research Program, learning about glaciers as they go. This may be achieved "virtually" through various tools that create an interactive experience. The exhibit space may use a combination of graphic panels, innovative audio/visual technology, and interactive hands-on stations. We want this section of the visitor center to be geared towards experience-based learning, not solely static panels the visitor reads. Static panels, if used, should only play a supporting role. Following are some ideas for the exhibit. This is solely to demonstrate the type of exhibits we are looking for. None of these ideas are required to be included in the exhibit. • A life-size hologram of a researcher on the icefield who ‘talks' to the visitor sharing what they are doing • A station where visitors can actually take ice core samples and learn why scientists take samples on the Juneau Icefield. • An interactive map of the Mendenhall Glacier and Juneau Icefield • Update/replace the ‘ice cave' to use current technology and lighting. Maybe even make the wall cold to the touch to engage multiple senses. Q. Wouldn't such an experience take more than the 2 minutes of engagement you hope for? a. Not necessarily, but we will leave it to the designers to present options for achieving both objectives. Q. Is there other work underway at the Visitor Center that may affect this design? A. Yes. The Forest Service has been creating a facility Master Plan for the last two years with a contractor and the public. Our facilities aren't adequate for the increasing demand which includes 19% growth in cruise visitors in just two years. One aspect includes expansion of the theater which is adjacent to this exhibit. The design of the Glacier Science Exhibit will need to account for and integrate with designs for a theater remodel that aren't yet final, but should be soon.
