- Description
- ***SEE ATTACHED COMBINED SYNOPSIS FOR FULL DETAILS, INCLUDING TERMS AND CONDITIONS*** SUMMARY OF REQUIREMENTS: One (1) commercial vessel with experienced crew is needed to assist with a research survey to sight marked Steller sea lions in the Eastern Aleutian Islands of Alaska. The vessel must be able to berth two (2) to four (4) personnel and equipment. The vessel must have two (2) 15 to 20-foot rigid-hulled inflatable boats or skiffs available for use. The primary inflatable boat or skiff (hereafter referred to as skiff) must be operated by a member of the ship crew who is skilled in skiff operations near shore. The vessel must have sufficient deck space to store the two (2) skiffs in locations from which they can be easily launched and recovered in calm to moderate weather, and safely and easily boarded by crew and scientific gear (3-4 small pelican cases or dry bags). The primary skiff will be used to take the scientific crew to observe sea lions hauled out on shore, and when needed, to drop the scientific crew on shore. The primary skiff operator should be skilled in operating the skiff near shore and dropping the crew on land in rocky intertidal areas. The skiff operators must be equipped with modern navigation (i.e., GPS) and communications electronics (i.e., radios provided by the vessel to the skiff drive and at least one of the scientific crew). The secondary skiff must be ready to launch operate in the event of an emergency with the primary skiff and crew. The Alaska Fisheries Science Center (AFSC), Marine Mammal Laboratory (MML) Division will provide scientific gear (including floatation suits; e.g., mustang suits). An experienced captain and a three-member crew will be needed to operate the vessel and when necessary, be capable of continuously running (i.e, overnight). A Chief Scientist will direct survey operations.
