Description

SSP�awarded follow-on services to SGL Composites Inc. (formerly HITCO) to convert AVTEX Rayon Cloth to Carbon Cloth for the Trident II Reentry Body Heatshield. This objective will be accomplished through converting the Rayon Cloth to Carbon Cloth, removing alkali metal contaminants (below 35ppm), testing (to physical, mechanical and chemical requirements), and storing the purified Carbon Cloth. SGL maintains proprietary facilities and processes for rayon cleaning and heat treating that no other company has been able to reproduce. Accordingly,�SGL has been the sole supplier of carbon-phenolic heatshields for the Navy�s Mk4 and Mk5 reentry bodies for the Trident II. The Navy has accumulated and has access to a database of flight performance data on�SGL carbon-phenolic materials resulting from hundreds of reentry body flight tests. �
