- Description
- The stone wall that surrounds Arlington National Cemetery (ANC)and is a shared boundary with Joint Base Meyer Henderson Hall (JBM-HH), was first constructed in 1862, and includes extensions made in the 1897. Stone materials used in wall construction are red Seneca sandstone, and bluestone or Carderock bluestone; cap stones are a greyish sandstone. A number of past actions repointing, reconstruction, spot repairs were performed inappropriately in a manner that does not meet federal historic preservation standards and guidelines; some wall sections are compromised by partial collapse, while other sections the wall has a lean or is otherwise unstable. The contractor shall provide all management, supervision labor, materials tools and equipment necessary to perform the following types of general work to correct deficiencies in the construction of the wall: Remove failing mortar joints and poorly executed repairs, repoint with appropriate mixture; secure or replace loose or missing stones; fill large voids with appropriate grout mixture; remove cap stones and reinstall with appropriate metal U-shaped flashing; reconstruct collapsed areas and point with appropriate mortar type and joint profile. The Contractor will be required to perform some design related actions prior to starting work including structural analysis and mortar specification. The contractor will also be required to provide any geotechnical work required for the completion of the project.
