Description
Moon-to-Mars Planetary Autonomous Construction Technology (MMPACT) project is the MSFC portion of a joint project between NASAs Space Technology Mission Directorate (STMD) Game Changing Development (GCD) Program, United States Air Force, Kennedy Space Center, Jet Propulsion Laboratory and other companies and universities. MMPACT will be managed at Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) through the Science and Technology Office (STO) as part of the In-space Manufacturing Portfolio Project. The MMPACT project will focus on the utilization of lunar in-situ materials for the manufacturing construction of large-scale infrastructure elements like habitats, berms, landing pads, blast shields, walkways, floors, storage facilities, and roads using one or both of two techniques. Manufacturing techniques will be developed to deliver products mentioned above. The Microwave Structure Construction Capability (MSCC) team will develop microwaves as a means to prepare and consolidate the Lunar regolith into a solid glass/ceramic structure, characterize and protect vehicle from volatiles, and verify that the product meets design requirements.
