Description
The Laboratory of Chemical Physics ([LCP) of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) has a requirement to purchase a Tecmag Redstone NMR/MRI Spectrometer console. The Solid State NMR and Biomolecular Physics (SSNMRBPS) Section of the Laboratory of Chemical Physics, uses advanced nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques to characterize the molecular structures of protein assemblies and to image subcellular components. These measurements are performed with superconducting magnets, including a 17.5 Tesla (17.5 T) magnet. NMR and MRI measurements require the application of complicated sequences of radio-frequency (RF) pulses, with specific timing, pulse amplitudes, phases, and frequencies. MRI measurements additionally require magnetic field gradient pulses. RF and gradient pulses are delivered by a spectrometer console, which contains all relevant digital, analog, and RF electronics. The spectrometer console also contains low-noise amplification circuity and high-speed digitizers for acquisition of NMR/MRI signals. The spectrometer console is controlled by specially designed software, which allows the creation and execution of pulse sequences, averaging and storage of signals, and data processing. For experiments required by the research in SSNMRBPS, the spectrometer console must be capable of delivering pulses at three independent frequencies, up to the NMR frequency of hydrogen nuclei at 17.5 T, which is 745.5 MHz.
