- Special Notice N0016421SNB07 Agency: Department of the Navy Office: Naval Sea Systems Command Location: NSWC Crane Division Classification Code: 6636 Environmental Chambers and Related Equipment NAICS Code: 334511 Search, Detection, Navigation, Guidance, Aeronautical, and Nautical System and Instrument Manufacturing Response Due Date: 30 November 2020 Request for Solutions: INERTIAL MEASUREMENT UNIT (IMU) AS A NAVIGATIONAL TOOL FOR HYPERSONIC WEAPON SYSTEMS (S2MARTS) PURPOSE This Request for Solutions (RFS) is issued to seek innovative solutions to develop, miniaturize, and demonstrate a hypersonic-capable Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) with performance comparable to or better than current IMU technology while reducing Size, Weight, and Power (SWaP), specifically focusing on minimizing the volume required within the hypersonic vehicle. The Government will evaluate the solutions with the intent of awarding an Other Transaction Agreement (OTA) in accordance with 10 U.S. Code 2371b. BACKGROUND AND SUMMARY S2MARTS Vendors interested in responding to this RFS must be members of the Strategic & Spectrum Missions Advanced Resilient Trusted Systems (S2MARTS) consortium. Interested parties may visit S2MARTS.org for membership information. This project will be managed by a Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane Division Project Manager. PROJECT OVERVIEW Inertial measurement Units (IMUs) are common in Department of Defense (DoD) systems ranging from shipboard weapons to aircraft and missiles. IMUs measure and calculate attitude, angular rates, velocity, and position. Inertial navigation systems (INS) and GPS based navigation systems rely on IMU output to perform navigation control. IMUs have a long history of applications and technology refinement. New DoD systems, notably hypersonic vehicles, require the performance of current IMU technology, but with reduced Size, Weight, and Power (SWaP). The DoD is seeking prototype technologies for an IMU with comparable specifications to top-performing IMUs and designed to minimize volume required within the vehicle. Specific technology areas and/or domains impacted by this prototype project will include hypersonics, missile defense solutions, aircraft, and small satellites. The IMU as a Navigational Tool for Hypersonic Weapon Systems will inform and advance the DoDs portfolio of future weapons and sensors by combining and evaluating IMUs in a novel weapon system application. Please visit the S2MARTS website at https://s2marts.org/ to review the full RFS.
