Description
Sole source to Alaska Native Corporation. The mission of the Office of Naval Research (ONR) is to shape the future Naval force, anticipate capability requirements, and to provide the Science and Technology (S&T) foundation needed for our Navy and Marine Corps to maintain a decisive technological advantage. Its vision is to be the preeminent S&T organization, recognized both inside and outside the Department of the Navy, as the place to go with good ideas and innovative concepts. ONR inspires and guides breakthrough innovations and transitions state-of-the-art technology solutions to the Navy and Marine Corps. The Naval Research (ONR) is responsible for cross-disciplinary research programs and for education and career development programs that increase the supply and capabilities of scientist and engineers engaged in activities that improve Navy and Marine Corps capabilities. Two of these programs, the Naval Research Enterprise Internship Program (NREIP) and the Science and Engineering Apprenticeship Program (SEAP), provide an opportunity for students to participate in research at a Department of Navy (DON) laboratory during the summer. Details of these current programs can be found on the ONR website at http://www.onr.navy.mil/en/Education-Outreach.aspx. The goals of NREIP and SEAP are to encourage participating students to pursue science and engineering careers, to further their education via mentoring by laboratory personnel and their participation in research, and to make them aware of DON research and technology efforts, which can lead to employment within the DON. NREIP provides competitive research internships to approximately 750 college students (e.g. 600 undergraduates and 150 graduate students) each year. Participating students typically spend ten weeks during the summer doing research at approximately 45 DON laboratories. To participate, a student must be enrolled at a 4 year accredited college/university (final eligibility is determined by ONR) and have completed some college credits after graduating high school and before beginning the internship. About 3000 applications are anticipated for NREIP. NREIP interns are selected by participating DON laboratories and it is anticipated that approximately 800 applicants will be offered an appointment to yield approximately 750 participants. NREIP participants receive a stipend distributed by the Contractor. The stipend is an allowance paid to interns for their participation in the research efforts. SEAP provides competitive research internships to approximately 300 high school students each year. Participating students spend eight weeks during the summer doing research at approximately 40 DON laboratories. About 1500 applications are anticipated for SEAP. SEAP interns are selected by the participating DON laboratories. It is anticipated that approximately 400 applicants will be offered an appointment to yield approximately 300 participants. SEAP participants receive a stipend distributed by the Contractor. The stipend is an allowance paid to interns for their participation in the research efforts. To participate in either NREIP or SEAP, a student must be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident Alien. Participation by Permanent Resident Aliens may be limited by security considerations. Participation of individuals with dual citizenship may be eligible at designated naval sites. In addition to NREIP and SEAP, this requirement will also cover the Naval Horizons program. This program will provide for up to 1,000 students to view a series of 17+ videos and then report on various Naval technologies.
