- Description
- 1.0 INTRODUCTION The USGS needs to acquire depth profile single crystal U-Pb zircon analysis from rock samples. 2.0 BACKGROUND The USGS conducts research on regional geology related to energy, minerals, and hazards. This involves making geologic maps of the area being investigated, and reconstructing the tectonic, climatic, erosional and depositional histories of rocks within the study region. Depth profiling U-Pb zircon geochronology is a key technique for determining age(s) from single zircon crystals. This is a unique analytical procedure used to determine complexities within zircon, including insight into growth histories. Additionally, the depth profiling technique is ideal for zircons which may be analyzed via multiple analyses as grains are largely preserved which permits future CA-TIMS, (U-Th/He) and detrital U-Pb-He double dating, from previously analyzed grains. The preservation of zircon via the depth profiling technique, as typical U-Pb zircon LA-ICP-MS analysis results in the destruction of half the mineral grain. The samples submitted for depth profiling analyses will help us elucidate the erosional, climatic and depositional histories for the greater Permian and Appalachian basins. 3.0 SCOPE Depth profiling of U-Pb zircon analysis to be completed on 2,500 zircon grains, which are poured onto double sided sticky tape, mounted on acrylic disks. Unpolished disks are placed into a large volume Helex sample cell and ablated using a PhotonMachine Analyte G.2 Excimer Laser that is attached to an Element2 HR-ICP-MS. The U-Pb depth ratios are collected through time on from single zircon crystal and reduced offline using visual age in iolite. Final ratios and age data are imported into Excel Spreadsheet format. 4.0 APPLICABLE DOCUMENTS Publications documenting state-of-the-art analytical methods for collection and interpretation of Depth-profiling U-Pb analysis. Responses to this sources sought notice will be used by the Government to make appropriate acquisition decisions. All interested sources must respond to future solicitation announcements separately from responses to this market survey. Any solicitation that may be issued will be posted on the Federal Business Opportunities website and no paper copies will be provided. If a solicitation is released, in order to receive an award your company must have an active SAM Unique Identification and be registered on-line at the System for Award Management (SAM). You will also be required to provide your small business status information either via the RFP or the On-line Representations and Certifications (ORCA) also located at the SAM website before an award to your company can be made. Your on-line ORCA registration will cover any/all of your offers to the Federal Government, and only needs updated annually.
