- Description
- The government has strict requirements for the acquisition of non-human primates for use in diarrheal research. The Non-Human Primates used for research need to be from a closed, captive-bred colony. Captive-bred animals have a known health status and a known genetic composition. Animals from wild-caught sources in the Amazon basin, because of their unknown health history and parasite burden, are not desirable for biomedical research because they could have, or been exposed to, the disease that the researchers are investigating, which will effect experimental results. In addition, the use of the captive-bred population negates any impact of acquisition on wild populations of A. nancymaae and eliminates the possibility of inadvertently supporting the illicit trade of them. For scientific consistency and comparative analysis, the delivered Aotus nancymaae must have the following characteristics: Free from communicable diseases In good health with no observable injuries or illnesses Age between 12 and 24 months Weight over 700 grams An equal male/female sex distribution, with a no more than 55/45 % distribution between male and female in either direction. Study requires the NHP are immunologically nave to certain antigens. The contractor must allow biological samples to be drawn that will be shipped to NAMRU-6 Lima for testing to ensure the appropriate A. nancymaae selection. The A. nancymaae individuals will not be infected by Mycobacterium tuberculosis as determined by tuberculin skin test (TST) using PPD. The contractor shall test all A. nancymaae one time prior to shipment using purified protein derivative (PPD) procured by them and provide the test result with the A. nancymaae individuals when these are shipped. The contractor shall accept the return of the live NHP upon the completion of the study. The contractor shall coordinate and fund the transport of NHP from their facility in Iquitos to NAMRU-6 in Lima. The contractor shall coordinate all airline and ground travel arrangements, including permits, for door-to-door delivery to NAMRU-6 in Lima.
