- Description
- Project Description: The project is located at the rear of the US Chancery in Stockholm, facing Dag Hammarskjlds vg. The grounds have been severely damaged during several recent construction project where the backyard was used as a staging area. The original site slope was altered, and a large mound was created, to house containers and building materials during construction. The added mount is not only unsightly it is moreover damaging the mature trees on the site. The location referred to as the backyard is facing the street, Dag Hammarskjlds vg, and has a beautiful view toward an inlet of the Baltic. The site is visible to both vehicular and pedestrian traffic passing by on the street, where the sloping lawn and street is separated only by the security fence. The street is a prominent street and frequently used by tour busses etc. the Chancery and Site is featured as part of most of the guided tours. Though post is referring to this project as the Backyard Restoration Project this piece of the property is a highly visible and a prominent aspect of the Stockholm Chancery complex and very much the front lawn in many ways except for Chancery entrance and access. The intend of this project is to restore the original grading to the site and while doing so adding a few carefully considered program elements to the backyard. Understanding that these past projects are not the last construction project that will take place, a designated container and staging area will be added tucked away from the main street and close to the back gate. When grading (restoring) the site, a careful scrupling of the slope is creating a flat area large enough to accommodate a large tent providing seating for events and larger gatherings. For example, the annual prominent 4th of July event. The walkway across the site that has been impromptu created during the construction projects will be kept but refined and slightly altered to better fit and add to an organic natural feel. The addition of a small amphitheater using the natural (restored) grade will provide a spontaneous meeting and gathering place. Perfect for lunch breaks, small gatherings and as a stage during events. The plants and materials proposed for this project are to be native and natural. Materials are to complement the architecture of the building in color and type and add to the overall impression of the complex. Permeable pavers and graveled pathways are proposed rather than solid hardscape. The overall impression should be that of a mostly untouched piece of nature rather than a groomed garden. All construction is exterior only, access to the interior of the chancery is not required for this project.
