Description
Statement of Work 1.0 Introduction The contractor shall perform work as described in the Statement of Work (SOW). Background Training to gain sufficient competence in psychotherapy skills is particularly important to military psychiatrists who are often assigned to isolated duty stations as the sole mental health provider following their residency training. Full training in psychodynamic/psychoanalytic psychotherapy and cognitive behavioral therapy, is a requirement to adequately teach psychiatry residents in psychotherapy. There are no NMCSD psychiatry faculty members credentialed to provide adequate didactic instruction in psychodynamic/psychoanalytic psychotherapy and cognitive behavioral therapy. However, there are independent private practice psychiatrists and clinical psychologists in the San Diego civilian community, who do have full psychodynamic/psychoanalytic and cognitive behavioral therapy training to effectively teach psychiatry residents in these required therapy skills. This training must be done in person, through a significant portion of the year, which would negate the possibility of traveling for anyone who is not local. These classes cannot be taught online due to the requirement for participants to practice skills that they are learning throughout the course, and that is only feasible by using an in-person format. 3.0 Scope of Work To provide postgraduate year (PGY) 2, 3 and 4 psychiatry residents formal in-person didactic instruction in psychodynamic/psychoanalytic psychotherapy, and cognitive behavioral therapy, to include the integration of psychoanalytical concepts in case formulation; and the development of awareness and technical approaches to transference and counter transferences with patients. 4.0 Hours of Services Three group class didactic lecture series composed of one-hour class sessions, held once a week, as follows: Group Psychotherapy course for 8 PGY2 psychiatry residents; 6 class sessions per year. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy course for 8 PGY3 psychiatry residents; 12 class sessions per year. T-Group sessions for 24 PGY 2/3/4 psychiatry residents; up to 50 sessions per year. 5.0 Task Description: Psychodynamic/psychoanalytic psychotherapy, and cognitive behavioral therapy instruction through didactic group classes in Group Psychotherapy; Cognitive Behavioral Therapy; and T-Group sessions; conducted in the San Diego area, to include the integration of psychoanalytical concepts in case formulation; and the development of awareness and technical approaches to transference and counter transferences with patients. Submission of curriculum vitae for review by psychiatry residency program leadership, is required prior to commencement of didactic instruction.
