Description
Opportunity: Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), operated by the Lawrence Livermore National Security (LLNS), LLC under contract no. DE-AC52-07NA27344 (Contract 44) with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), is offering the opportunity to enter into a collaboration to further develop and commercialize its Temporal Resolution and Fidelity Enhancement of Arbitrary Waveforms technology. Background: With the trend to increasingly faster processes, there is a need for ubiquitous Digital-to-Analog Converters (DACs) to keep pace. Current state of the art electronic DAC devices are thermal-noise-limited resulting in decreasing signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) as speeds increase. Description: This invention exploits the non-linearities of optical Mach-Zehnder (MZ) electrooptic modulators to enhance small signal dynamic range at higher bandwidths. A linear photodiode (PD) converts the amplified optical signal output from the MZ back to an electrical signal completing an Electrical-Optical-Electrical (EOE) conversion cycle. The dynamic range can be further enhanced by daisy chaining several MZ-PD EOE stages together and feeding the output from one stage into the input of the next stage. Advantages/Benefits: Enhances dynamic range of high bandwidth electrical signals in regimes where state of the art electronic DACs fail. Uses standard telecom photonics components in a scalable process. Potential Applications: Ultrafast signal test and measurement instrumentation, especially for operations in the 10 100 GHz regime and beyond. Development Status: What do we have in-hand, the current TRL and whether this is a partnership, license, or start-up opportunity; Patented, Patent application submitted, Provisional patent, No patent, Know-how based or Copyright Current stage of technology development: TRL 2-3 LLNL has patent(s) on this invention. U.S. Patent Application No. 11868025 Temporal Resolution and Fidelity Enhancement of Arbitrary Waveforms published 1/9/2024 LLNL is seeking industry partners with a demonstrated ability to bring such inventions to the market. Moving critical technology beyond the Laboratory to the commercial world helps our licensees gain a competitive edge in the marketplace. All licensing activities are conducted under policies relating to the strict nondisclosure of company proprietary information. Please visit the IPO website at https://ipo.llnl.gov/resources for more information on working with LLNL and the industrial partnering and technology transfer process. Note: THIS IS NOT A PROCUREMENT. Companies interested in commercializing LLNL's Temporal Resolution and Fidelity Enhancement of Arbitrary Waveforms technology should provide an electronic OR written statement of interest, which includes the following: Company Name and address. The name, address, and telephone number of a point of contact. A description of corporate expertise and/or facilities relevant to commercializing this technology. Please provide a complete electronic OR written statement to ensure consideration of your interest in LLNL's Temporal Resolution and Fidelity Enhancement of Arbitrary Waveforms technology. The subject heading in an email response should include the Notice ID and/or the title of LLNLs Technology/Business Opportunity and directed to the Primary and Secondary Point of Contacts listed below. Written responses should be directed to: Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Innovation and Partnerships Office P.O. Box 808, L-779 Livermore, CA 94551-0808 Attention: IL-13359
