Conduct field work, laboratory and data analyses of the rocky
intertidal habitat. The contractor shall furnish all facilities,
supplies, materials, data, and services to assess and report on the
algal and sessile invertebrates of the rocky intertidal areas of the
GFNMS and northern portion of the Monterey Bay National Marine
Sanctuary (MBNMS), from Bodega Head, Sonoma County, south through San
Mateo County, Pigeon Point, Bean Hollow, south end of Rodeo Cove, Slide
Ranch, Duxbury Reef or Agate Beach, south side of Estero Americano,
Pinnacle Rock, and Bodega Head, not including the San Francisco Bay.
The objectives of this project are to 1) establish non-destructive,
stratified random and permanent sampling quadrats within the mainland
intertidal areas of the GFNMS and northern portion of the MBNMS; 2)
determine species inventory for the intertidal communities; 3)
determine density and percent cover within stratified random and
permanent quadrats; 4) determine density of selected sessile organisms;
5) photo-document, collect and archive voucher specimens from the
intertidal areas for future reference. The contract is anticipated for
a twelve month period with options to continue an additional two
years. At the conclusion of two sampling years, the contractor shall
develop recommendations for sampling techniques used for natural
resources damage assessment and adequate sample size for quadrats
(random and permanent). Methods to be used shall include photo and
point quadrats (30 x 50 cm areas). Each quadrat will be assessed in the
field, using the point contact method. A minimum of 96 quadrats will be
assessed twice per year. The criteria listed below in descending order
will be evaluated in selecting a qualified firm to perform this
contract. Prospective contractors must be able t6o demonstrate through
either previous experience or schooling, knowledge and ability of the
following: 1) Field research, habitat assessment techniques used in
this type of study; 2) Identification of northern or central California
algae; 3) Technical writing ability; 4) Ability to administer programs
of this size; 5) Ability to present complex scientific materials in a
clear and concise manner. The SIC 8731 has been assigned to this
