COMMERCE BUSINESS DAILY ISSUE OF JULY 12,1995 PSA#1386Los Alamos National Laboratory, P.O. Box 1663, Los Alamos, NM 87545 A -- BASIC RESEARCH WORK Sol. IPO:LIC95-CPR705-1119. Contact Charles

505/665-0154. The University of California, which operates the Los
Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) under contract to the Department of
Energy, solicits interest from companies wishing to publish and
distribute for sale a 200-page book of physical science activities,
called Science at Home. The book enables parents and their children to
learn science in a fun, non-threatening, academically sound way. The
Laboratory has begun a national campaign to disseminate the Science at
Home program and in support of this effort, we are seeking a contract
with a publishing company to publish and distribute the Science at
Home book. The boldly illustrated, easy-to-follow Science at Home book
leads adults and children through hands-on-activities illustrating
fundamental principles of physical science. All the activities use
inexpensive household materials. The quality of the science is
first-rate. A team of master teachers (grades 4-8) developed the book's
activities, a science curriculum specialist refined them for clarity
and age-appropriateness, a team of Los Alamos National Laboratory
scientists reviewed them for accuracy, and families in northern New
Mexico field tested team. The 200-page book is organized around the
metaphor of learing science in any child's home. The book's six
sections are each dedicated to one room or area of a house: the
Bathroom, Kitchen Cupboards, Refrigerator, Toy Box, Laundry Room, and
Garage. A standardized format makes the activities easy to follow,
under these headings: Activity Introduction, Material Listing, Here's
the Plan, What's Going On Here?, Where Does This Happen In Real Life?,
and Now Try This. Other features include a glossary, a bibliography,
and an index. Although our intended audience is families with children
in the elementary and middle school levels, our pilot program
effectively involved particpants at all levels. Future developments
will include a Spanish translation, an interactive CD-ROM, and
additional books focused on environmental science, space science, and
chemistry. Interested organizations must possess existing capabilities
in publishing, marketing and support services in the domestic
marketplace. Any organization with interests in the above mentioned
areas must respond with a statement of interest describing the
organization's expertise, publishing and marketing capabilities,
financial resources (e.g., annual report or corporate resume) and
motivation for participating in this program. The statement must be
dated within 15 calendar days of the date of this notice. (191) Loren Data Corp. http://www.ld.com (SYN# 0007 19950711\A-0007.SOL)
