Anniston Army Depot is seeking sources for companies that can provide a precision lathe having an infinitely variable high speed range for producing both production and prototype parts to precision tolerances from a variety of materials. THIS IS A SOURCES SOUGHT SYNOPSIS. DO NOT REQUEST SOLICITATION. The lathe should have variable speeds and variable feed range with a 1 horsepower rating. The U.S. Customary System of Units (US) shall be used in the design and construction of the machine. The design shall facilitate changing feeds, speeds, and tooling. It shall be suitable for all normal lathe functions (turning, boring, and thread cutting on ferrous and non-ferrous materials). The lathe shall consist essentially of a cabinet mounted bed, a variable speed headstock, variable feed carriage and cross slide, inch/metric threading gearbox, tailstock, and lever operated collet closer. Machine Sizes and Capacities are as follows: (1) Machine: swing over bed-11 inches; swing over carriage-9 inches; swing over cross slide-6 inches; distance between centers-18 inches; main drive motor-1 HP. (2) Headstock: spindle type/size-SC tapered nose; round SC collet capacity-1- 1/16 inches; hex SC collet capacity-7/8 inches; square SC collet capacity- 3/4 inches; step chuck capacity-6 inches; expanding collet capacity-3 inches; hole through spindle-1-1/4 inches; center size, MT-manufacturer's standard; infinitely variable spindle speeds-125 to 3,000 rpm. (3) Carriage: Cross slide travel-5-1/2 inches; compound slide travel-3 inches; carriage power feed range / English - 5/16 to 7 ipm and Metric - 8 to 178 mm/min; Cross slide power feed range / English - 3/16 to 4 ipm and Metric - 5 to 102 mm/min; tool post slide-inch/metric dial. (4) Gear box, combination English and Metric: Number of threads-72; English-36; Metric- 36. (5) Range of threads: English-11 to 108; Metric-.275 to 2.7. (6) Lead Screw: Diameter-1 inch; threads per inch-8 tpi. (7) Tailstock: spindle diameter-1 3/8 inches; spindle travel-3 3/4 inches; center size, MT-#2. Alignment Tolerances (dimensions in inches): Spindle center runout - 0.0002 TIR; spindle runout - 0.000015 TIR; spindle alignment with bed ways: Vertical w/12 inch test bar-0.0004 and horizontal w/12 inch test bar-0.0002; Headstock and tailstock center alignment: high at tailstock end of bar-0.001 total, leadscrew cam action-0.0002, leadscrew lead error- +0.001 in 12 inches and +0.0004 in 4 inches; Leadscrew alignment with ways: Horizontal and vertical alignment-0.003 max, cross feed screw backlash-0.002; Cross slide alignment square with spindle axis/concave- 0.0005 in 9 inches. A switchable inch/metric digital readout system for x and y axes is required. Graduations shall be a minimum of 0.00005 inches on x axis and a minimum of 0.00010 inches on y axis.
