accordance with Article 10.6. G/TBT/Notif. 95.266. 1. Member to
Agreement notifying: CANADA. If applicable, name of local government

3. Notified under Article 2.9.2. 4. Products covered (HS or CCCN where
applicable, otherwise national tariff heading. ICS numbers may be
provided in addition, where applicable): Novel foods. 5. Title and
number of pages of the notified document: Proposed Amendment to the
Food and Drug Regulations (Schedule No. 948) (pages 2987-2992). 6.
Description of content: A new division is proposed for addition to the
Food and Drug Regulations that will define the concept of ``novel
food'' and provide for notification prior to the sale or advertising
for sale of such products. Foods that will be considered novel include:
Substances that have previously not been used as food in Canada, or
result from a process that has not previously been used for food in
Canada; existing foods that have been modified by genetic manipulation
and exhibit one or more characteristics that were previously not
identified in that food, or food that results from production by a
genetically manipulated organism exhibiting such new characteristics;
food containing microorganisms that have previously not been used as
food or to process food before; and food that is substantially modified
from the traditional product, or is manufactured by a process that has
been substantially modified from the traditional process. 7. Objective
