Background: Under the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) Agreement on Technical Barriers to Trade (Standards Code) the following nations have agreed to provide advanced notices of their central government's proposals concerning their trade related standards: Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, Egypt, Finland, France, West Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Hungary, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Korea, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Pakistan, Philippines, Portugal, Romania, Rwanda, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Tunisia, United Kingdom, United States, Yugoslavia, and the European Economic Community. Such standards and certification requirements, if adopted, can be of concern to U.S. exporters. Accordingly, we publish brief descriptions of proposed mandatory standards activities as soon as possible after receipt from adhering nations.
