NUSAL FURNACE EQUIPMENT - The NUSAL furnace is an automated submerged
electrode, refractory lined salt heat-treating furnace. The bath size
is 44 inches wide by 52 inches deep and 20 feet long. The system was
designed to heat treat nine (9) 1676 pound uranium ingots every 90
minutes at 1350 degrees F +/- 10 degrees F in 50% NaCl-50% KCL molten
salt. The furnace was required for a 1676 pound ingot to 1350 degrees
F within 30 minutes after insertion of the 1676 pound ingot, and is to
reach the set point within 10 minutes after insertion of the ingot.
Maximum design temperature is 1800 degrees F. All loading, unloading
and control of furnace operations are done through an Allen Bradley
PLC5/15 programmable logic controller. Loading and unloading of the
ingots as well as movement through the furnace, are performed via a
``Smart'' overhead crane controlled through the PLC. The furnace is
designed to be enclosed in a ventilated room, with the exhaust going
through a 20,400 cfm scrubber to remove salt residues from the exhaust
gases. CRUSHER SYSTEM - The crusher system is capable of handling 1-2
tons per hour of materials depending on the type material being fed.
The system is capable of dumping a drum's contents into the crusher or
handling the entire drum including its contents. All materials will be
shredded into 1/2'' to 1'' diameter particles; metals can be separated
from nonferrous materials by using the magnetic separator. Materials
the system was designed to handle include: filter cakes, sheet metal,
steel drums, graphite, and wood. The system is automated with operation
from control panels located adjacent to the system. The system is
enclosed and designed for ventilation to minimize the release of
particulate to the work environment. Dust collection filtration
equipment itself is not included. The erected system extends to a
height of about 32 Ft. and includes, but is not limited to, the
following items: An enclosed drum dumping station including power
roller conveyors ventilated delidding station, and 55 gallon drum
dumper; Feed hopper to primary shredder; Primary shredder; Feed hopper
between primary and secondary shredders with inspection access doors;
A secondary shredder; Chute between secondary and tertiary shredder
with inspection access doors; Feed chute to magnetic separator;
Magnetic separator; Product surge hopper with discharge gate; Enclosed
drum filling stations for drumming out product and metal, including
power roller conveyors and weighting scale; Instrumentation an controls
for the system; Dust collection exhaust pickup from the system to
battery limit flange connections; Motor control centers for the system;
Structures and support for equipment including foundations and
modifications to 2nd floor with access platforms and stairs; Fire
detection and nitrogen for suppression system exists for the shredders;
Tertiary shredder; Drum out stations with power roller conveyors.
