The NVSL provides technical assistance to the Veterinary Services staff, state, Federal, university, and foreign veterinary laboratories by providing a full range of pathology, parasitology, toxicology, and chemistry services, and the isolation and identification of pathogenic bacteria and viruses. To accommodate the varying and diversified information needs of laboratory operations, an effectiveLaboratory Information Management System is of paramont importance. Such a system must accommodate a diverse laboratory environment, facilitating the recording and retrieval of extensive and diverse test and research data. Inventory of laboratory animals, materials, chemicals and reagents must be maintained, include provisions for automatically billing selected customers for services rendered, meet all current laboratory and environmental requirements including Generally Accepted Laboratory Practices (GALP) and be a multi-user Relational Database Management application that operates in a POSIX compliant environment.
