14 -- UPGRADES AND CALCULATIONS TO THE SM-2 BLK IV AND ENHANCED SEA SPARROW MISSILE (ESSM) FLYOUTS SOL N00178-96-Q-0223 DUE 080696 POC Roberta C. Moss, Purchasing Agent 540-653-4304. The Naval Surface Warfare Center, Dahlgren Division, Dahlgren, VA shall use Simplified Acquisition procedures to place an order with combustion research and flow technology, 174 North Main Street, Bldg 3, Dublin, PA 18917 on a sole source basis. Combustion research is the developer of the Craftech Navier-Stokes Code. This code is the main computer code used for the solution of computational fluid dynamics. It has the unique capability of handling two phase flow present in solid rocket exhausts, which is essential for the determination of thermal loads on the ablative lining of current Navy launchers. Large codes, such as Craft, require a large expenditure of time to develop a working knowledge of its use and capabilities. Three dimensional computational fluid dynamics calculations are intensive, consuming large amounts of computer time. Queing policies in major computer centers discourage the use of non-parallel codes. Parallelization is essential for the shortening of solution time and the feasibility of the three dimensional CFD calculations. While not proprietary, the Craft code is a tightly controlled research code by the U.S. Army Missile Command (MICOM) the principal sponsor of the code. The code has not been released for general use and is limited to Craftech, the principal developer and a few groups within the DOD. Although it is possible that another company could propose alternate codes for the calculations, extensive modifications such as adding implicit fully coupled particle equations which have already been included in the Craft code. In addition, the capabilities of the codes would have to be evaluated by performing calculations such as the VLS uptake Plume Environment, before application to the VLS canister flow could begin. The Craft code has already met this process and has been identified as the code best suited for missile launcher environment, which makes combustion research unique in its capabilities as they are the developer. In addition to the Craft code, combustion research is thoroughly familiar with NSWCDD's Vertical Launching System, which is the system needing the calculations to be performed on. Under the procurement, the contractor shall perform the following: the contractor shall provide the necessary labor and materials to calculate the transient heating environment and pressure loading for the MK 21 canister during a SM-2BLK IV Missile Flyout, using the Craftcode. The contractor shall also calculate the uptake Plume and Wind induced loads on an ESSM Missile during a VLS Flyout and to provide CG loading as a function of height above deck, using the Craftcode. The contractor shall also upgrade the no-slip boundary condition of Craft with compressible wall function; validate the upgrade via comparisons with pure Craft pipe flow solutions utilizing fully resolved boundary layers; perform an Axisymmetric CCL Flow Field calculation to demonstrate the utility of this approach for realistic launcer problems; develop a domain decomposition version of the Craft code with two phase and K-E Turbulence capabilities for IBM SP2 parallel computer; perform efficiency studies and Benchmarks for a CCL launcher; design a specialized version with patching; and document the Benchmarks and modifications. As GFM under this procurement, NSWCDD shall provide a copy of mechanical interface control document (MICD) which contains missile dimensions and rocket motor information; other necessary rocket motor and particular date for constructing flow input files; AFT closure rupture pressure and effective flow area at bottom of canister; and grid input files for the CCL launcher. As a result of this procurement, the contractor shall provide: an estimate of the number of Cray C90 hours to calculate the solution for the SM-2 BLK IV Flyout; documents of results of the calculations and a report of the results; modified source code and input and output files required for NSWCDD to duplicate the results.
