The National Digital Library Program has a requirement for technical assistance to develop a Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML) document processing system that can be fully integrated with existing Library of Congress applications. Major system design issues to be assessed are: 1) methods and tools for accomplishing NDLP text conversion work efficiently and effectively; 2) design of SGML document processing system using OmniMark programming language and complementary tools; 3) integration of SGML document processing system with existing LC systems; and 4) training for SGML document processing system maintenance. Specific applications issues to be assessed include: 1) batch parsing of SGML documents encoded with the American Memory DTD; 2) batch parsing of SGML documents encoded with the Encoded Archival Description (EAD) DTD; 3) transformation of SGML-encoded document from the American Memory DTD to HTML; 4) transformation of SGML-encoded document from EAD DTD to HTML; 5) integration of database and SGML representations; 6) autotagging for text formatted with standard word processors as well as unformatted ASCII text; 7) interactive editing functions of partial or invalid SGML instances; 8) WWW delivery of SGML-encoded documents; 9) integration of relevant ISO standards such as Hytime (ISO 10744) and DSSSL (ISO 10179) into SGML document porcessing system; and 10) mechanisms for automatically creating links from encoded text documents to digital objects.
