OPTICAL STATE-OF-CHARGE MONITOR FOR LEAD-ACID BATTERIES Sandia National Laboratories, Albuquerque, New Mexico, has invented an Optical State-of-Charge Monitor for Lead-Acid Batteries (SD-5922). This invention results in a compact and simple to operate system to monitor the absorption of light as a function of the concentration of sulphuric acid in the battery, and thereby, the state of charge of the battery. Optical fibers are employed in various ways inside the battery to preferentially sense at desired wavelengths.
