The Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense (Health Affairs)/Clinical Services, Quality Management Division seeks detailed information about companies that perform newborn screening tests. Newborns are typically screened for several diseases which result from inborn genetic errors. The diseases screened for are mandated by each state but there is no uniformity among the states. At a minimum states screen for hypothyroidism and phenlyketonuria (PKU). At a maximum they screen for these two plus sickle cell disease, maple syrup disease, galactosemia, adrenal cortical hypoplasia, and biotinidase. Written descriptions of the screening programs should address: costs, education, training, collection of specimens, results storage and reporting, consultation, and follow up. This is not a request for proposal, nor does the Government intend to pay for the information provided.
